Yukon government announces a Minimum Wage Review - better late than never.
Yukon government announced a review of the minimum wage on February 27, 2018. Come April 1, 2018, the Yukon minimum wage is slated to move from $11.32 to $11.51 per hour. Believe it or not, that $0.19 per hour increase is supposed to adjust for the cost of living in Yukon.
The Yukon government has announced the review because several of the more progressive provinces (namely BC, Alberta and Ontario) have made the move to a more sustainable wage as the minimum wage. While Yukon Federation of Labour is pleased with the establishment of the Minimum Wage Review Board, we note this issue was brought forward by the Yukon NDP in 2017. The Yukon Liberals chose not to act upon the minimum wage until they were required to address it under legislation.
The public will soon have an opportunity to have their say regarding the Yukon Minimum Wage. Yukon Federationof Labour will release details on how people can participate as soon as we have the details.
